"It takes bacon wrapped balls to do a show this edgy... Thornton doesn't disappoint." -Watermark Orlando

“Thornton is funny and very out there...like Johnny Carson... he puts it up for all to see.” -Dallas Voice

“Thornton is a funny guy and a consummate performer...Shades of Jack Benny... although Benny would have blushed at Thornton’s every other word.” -Orlando Sentinel

“...Funny... Frank... Remarkable...” -Orlando Sentinel

“...honesty, charm, talent, goofiness, charisma and pure entertainment...” -Theatre Jones Dallas

Orlando Weekly

This past Saturday night, I missed Kevin J. Thornton’s 10:45 show, Strange Dreamz, by a scant three minutes. The gate was shut and they wouldn’t let me in. No amount of beseeching managed to move the door lady — they run a very tight ship at this year’s Fringe. OK, I thought, it’s been a long day; maybe I should just go home.   CLICK HERE to continue

Orlando Sentinel

Kevin J. Thornton returns to Fringe with funny, frank bits that range from why 15-year-old boys love living room furniture (and sometimes peanut butter) to his first sighting of male strippers on the old “Real People” TV show to his grandpa’s guitar. The set looks ready for stand-up comedy, but Thornton’s act (“90 percent new, 10 percent lazy,” he says) is more storytelling than punch lines -- with fab-but-faded references to Chess King and the Columbia House Record Club thrown in. The vignettes are punctuated with remarkable vocals in a handful of songs, including “Teenage Dream,” “Edge of Glory” and “Natural Woman,” all sung straight. CLICK HERE to continue

Off the grid

Well for the first time since there was "a grid" (ie facebook, twitter, iphones etc) I'm about to be off it for the next 5 days for a secret camping men's getaway.  If you never hear from me again I was probably eaten by bears.  and I don't mean the animal.  See you all next week.  kisses. -KJT

Critic's Pick Nashville Scene!

Nashvillians may remember Kevin Thornton from his eponymous New Wave band Thornton (which later became Waves on Waves). But when he moved to Los Angeles several years ago, he shifted his focus to comedy, rebranding himself as a "gay make Oprah with a potty mouth." (Which reminds me of a dream I once had where... awww nevermind.) Thornton's transition began with Sex, Dreams & Self Control, his comic/dramatic one-man show about coming out that debuted to packed houses at Bongo After Hours Theatre in 2009. Since then, he's worked the comedy circuit in Los Angeles and around the country, and has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered. He just published his second book, The Universe Sock Puppet, and recently topped 1,000 weekly listeners for his weekly podcast Strange Dreamz. (The April 9 edition provided the answer to a question that's been at the forefront of great mind's for years now: Yes, even gay men are fascinated by Dolly Parton's breasts.) Check out Huffington Post's "The Moment I Knew" project for a funny and touching video of Thornton discussing the titular topic. Though this performance at Canvas will focus on the comic side, he'll be singing, and rumor has it the crowd will be treated to covers by everyone from Springsteen to Katy Perry and TLC. Interview in Out and About

Musician, storyteller, and stand-up comedian Kevin J. Thornton returns to Nashville with his newest show for a one-night-only event at Canvas Lounge on Wednesday, April 25.
Coming off his highest-rated LGBT podcast on Miami’s Click Click Expose Online Radio Network, Thornton’s Strange Dreamz is a mix of music and storytelling about race, AIDS, current events and religion.

“It’s pretty cutting edge,” he says. “The funny thing is I tried a lot of it for the very first time in Indianapolis, and I was kinda scared. Most of the people who come to my shows they know what they’re in for.” Thornton adds that while the crowd was not filled with rednecks, he still wondered if someone was going to walk out in the middle of the show

REVIEW in the Dallas Voice

"Kevin Thornton’s one-man quasi-standup that includes songs (Katy Perry! Gaga!), short comic stories, a few jokes and some interplay with the audience. Thornton is funny and very out there, so not all the jokes seem to hit on a mixed audience, but like Johnny Carson, even when he’s not getting anything back, he puts it up for all to see" .
